A little bit quilts, a little bit not

I did it again-I went a full month without posting. Bad blogger! Where does the time go?

It is crazy to me to think back almost 12 years ago when I started blogging and realize that I was posting 2 or 3 times a week! How did I do that?

So here are the two most recent Tiny Club blocks that I taught in my guild this month. And yes, I do enjoy fussy-cutting.

As usual, I made "storyboards" to define the construction process. The designer of these blocks, Lynn Hopkins, used to do that for us when he taught these blocks before he left on a church mission. The circled block below in the right-hand board shows what happens when you reverse the value placement in your flying geese.

It takes me a long time to put these boards together.

What does NOT take a long time is the making of the blocks for the Moda Love quilt.

I did mix up the background fabrics a bit from when I last posted this, and I like it better this way. Then one evening while Chooky and friends were at Scrub Stitchin' (International Version), I got the top half all sewn together.

Had a chance to share my progress with some of the Chookshed Stitchers after they returned from Scrub Stitchin'.

Some have asked about our current snow conditions. The photo to the right was taken out my kitchen window two weeks ago! Hard to believe we still had that much snow in the middle of April. The baby lambs couldn't even go frisk in the pasture because it was still covered in snow.

But this was the view of the mountains yesterday, on the dirt road where I take many of my walks. I stopped here as I was driving home from town and took this shot. The snow on the valley floor is gone, but the mountains are still covered.

Just last Sunday there were two events in the heavens I wanted to share. First up, in the afternoon we had a display of a sun halo. There was no sundog this time, which is apparently caused by the orientation of the ice crystals. Who knew?

Then later that night, about 10 p.m., we had an even rarer event--the Northern Lights were barely visible. You can see one shot in my new header. They didn't actually appear that bright, but the real time photo hardly showed them at all. So the photo below was taken with my iPhone on a 3 second exposure. The green and purple is brighter in the photos, but it gives you a better idea of what we saw than the quick "shutter click".

This is the third time I've seen the Northern Lights, and each time was here in this valley--and this is probably the second best view I've had. My dream is to see them from Iceland, or Norway, or some other such northern point someday. On our Alaskan cruise last September we missed a wonderful display of them in Juneau by 1 week. :(

Yesterday I sent off my doll quilt for the Humble Quilts Doll Quilt Swap. I'm excited to see if the recipient likes it, and to find out what comes my way.

Maybe next time I will have a little more quilty content. We'll see. Until then, be creative and be kind.

  2. Congrats on posting your tiny blocks. I love making Moda Love Quilts. Now to get a couple quilted. Sunny days, no coat days are good to me. Gotta pack snow clothes for Wyoming though.

  3. There are 37 pieces in that tiny block on the left!!! Amazing. I can imagine the story boards do take a while, not just to make but to consider how to make them. I hope your guild appreciates you, Janet.
Aren't the Northern Lights fabulous and beautiful?! Lucky you to be see them where you live. I saw them many years ago on our way to visit my husband's family in Upstate New York. I didn't understand what they were at first--a fire, some neon signs in the next town over, or .... The ones we saw were mostly red and green. That purple is gorgeous!
I'm still envious of the snow you had this winter. I know you're grateful for spring, though.

  4. We were supposed to have an opportunity to see the northern lights last week but it clouded over that night. You got some great photos, that sun dog is huge! Your tiny blocks are so perfect, I can just imagine the time it took to create the teaching aids. Good that you're finally getting some spring weather!

  5. Love the wee blocks...the one on the left (looking at the screen left) is soooo cute...what a difference a couple of weeks makes to the landscape!...great photos of the sun halo and Northern Lights, how lucky you are to see them, I'm with you about wishing I could see the Lights play way north in Norway...there have been sightings of the Southern Aurora much further north than the phenomenon is usually visible lately, even in South West Victoria though not where I am...the atmosphere is certainly putting on shows...

  6. I adore your tiny blocks as you might guess! I feel the same way about blogging...how did I have time to do all that sewing and blogging?!? I can barely get any sewing time these days. Is it a stage of life thing?

  7. Beautiful Northern Lights! I’ve never had a chance to see them. I’m sure that snow will be melting soon. 🙂. Thanks for sharing your projects in progress!

  9. I noticed your new Header straight away Janet & thought Oh my - another stunning shot from where you live. You are so lucky indeed to have such spectacular scenery around you. I was looking out my laundry window this morning (feeling blah at all the wet laundry to do) as it was open & I noticed the leaves turning red on the maples & it made me stop & be grateful that my laundry looks out on to something so pretty & not a block of brick buildings or the neighbors fence! Anyway - getting off track there - those tiny blocks in your hand are stunning! Just so small as there are two of them!!!

  10. We've been blogging about the same length of time, do you think many have given it away? I know I read very few blogs now, it's just a time thing, not that I don't want to. Your nature photos are always incredible! As I write this once again we have heavy rain and sideways wind, I hope our trees hold strong. Our winter is coming, but it will never be like yours. Quilty Hugs from afar x

  12. Moda Love must have seemed huge to work with after your tiny blocks. It was nice that you were able to join us in making the quilt. Your story boards are time consuming, but must be so helpful for your students. How exciting to see the northern lights. Your iphone photo shows them beautifully. Let's hope you start to get some springlike weather from now on.

  17. Oh my! You are at it again with those tiny, tiny blocks. Boggles my mind! The weather this year certainly has been a challenge. I am so glad you got to see the northern lights. They appeared in northern Maine, but we missed it! And, you are place second in the "slow to post" to your blog category as I am the winner by far! LOL. Only one post last month! I hope to remedy that, but am not promising anything!

  18. Hubby and I went Aurora hunting and found none! It's a bucket list item for me.
Your teeny blocks are perfect and I bet everyone is having loads of fun making them!
Our mountains are covered in snow and it hasn't stopped yet. Hubby and I went backpacking, but on the way home it snowed. Enough already! haha

  21. I'm leaving the making of tiny blocks all up to you! So tiny and so perfect :) Your 'heavenly' photos are fantastic. The northern lights were here but with a heavy cloud cover we didn't get to see them. I'm hoping for a good weekend with some sun!
