A Jewel Box made of scraps

Jewel Box is a traditional quilt pattern I have always admired. So when I started seeing quilts made from this pattern on a few blogs lately, I had a hard time resisting.

It is still a work in progress, but you get the idea. The individual four-patches will finish at 1".
It wasn't hard to get this far when I had a pile of these leftover from one secret project...

...and a bunch of these leftover from another secret project.

One of those secret projects is my August entry for the Mini of the Month with Wendy, and it will be revealed sometime next week. It was made for a "basket" mini quilt swap with Randy. Until then, I will give you another little peek.
Really gave it away there, didn't I? :)

The only other stitching I have done that I can show is a little bit of work on my lifetime hexie project, while on a quick trip over the mountain recently. I started a new flower.

In case you are new here, this is my project box for this little quilt. I keep a printout of the quilt taped into the top of the box, and I cross off each flower or star as I get it made.

I would like to start stitching together the parts I have made--sometime when I am in the mood to work on hexies. Except that never happens. :)
I love hexie quilts, but have no fondness for the process.

We have family visiting for the next week or so. I won't be stitching or visiting blogs much, but I will be back sometime next week to post about my swap with Randy.
Until then,
Janet O.

  1. Janet, I like the jewel box; what a great way to use your scraps. The hexie box is perfect with the design taped to the box top. That will be a beautiful quilt!

  12. I won't ever have a lifetime hexie project, because I won't start one! The jewel box blocks look like they would be perfect for some of our ministry members, though not in miniscule size! Enjoy your week with family. This is a great time to just relax and let the quilting wait until cooler weasther.

  13. Jewel box looks great and really inspired me, as I have a large collection of four patches from RSC that I didn't know what to do with. I cannot wait to see the reveal, that feather is just beautiful! Enjoy your time with family.

  14. It always amazes me how something as simple as 4-patches and HSTs can turn into something rather elegant looking. I guess that's why somebody named it Jewel Box. It's facets seem to sparkle when you look at it. Good to see progress on your hexies.

  15. I'm working on that same hex project (and have been for a few years). it is hard for me to find and maintain motivation for the hexies

  17. I made a jewel box quilt a number of years ago. I don't know that I still have the quilt. The colors were very similar to what you have used.

  18. One of my favorite patterns! I did a small quilt in greens and creams! Maybe some day I’ll make another!

    Blessed time with your family!

  19. I love your utilization of leftover units. With your troublesome shoulder, this sounds like a perfect project for you where you don't have to cut? I, too, love hexi quilts, but, I have no desire to sew one. Since reading your blog post, I can't get....."She'll beeeeeeeee comin' 'round the mountain when she comes......" The Bugs Bunny version of course! Enjoy your visit with family!

  20. I can't wait to see what you and Randy have dreamed up! I will edit my August post when I get my first peek. Funny that you love hexies, but not the process, I think I am the opposite. I have never been a hexagon fan until I started making them and now I love them and especially love the process. I always keep a box in my car in case I get stuck somewhere with nothing to do!

  21. You need a handwork pillow ... then you'd *love* the process of working on hexies!! That's an ambitious quilt -- how big are your hexies? The colors you're using in your jewel box quilt look like jewels...oooooooh! LOL! Perfect selection! :)

  22. Don't try and resist. We all know that it doesn't work! Your quilted feathers are gorgeous. You do the best work. Can't wait to see the finish. Enjoy the next couple of weeks.

  23. Of course YOUR jewel box is miniature... 1" 4-patches?? I honestly don't know if they were meant to be that TINY!! But they look fabulous...
And such a tease... FEATHERS??? OMG... That one looks amazing...
Back to MY sewing machine for our swap--need to finish it up this week so I can get it in the mail before we leave for the cabin on Thursday...
    ;-))

  24. I love the jewel box quilt pattern! It seems to look good no matter what fabric is used.
Take care and enjoy the rest of your summer.

  25. You do such amazing things with such tiny bits of fabric, Janet! I find it interesting that I'm unable to determine the size of quilts in photographs. I know some bloggers mention size, others don't and without being told or having an object for comparison it's hard to tell. Not knowing and then learning that your blocks are 1" finished makes your quilts even more amazing.

  26. the jewel box is one of those wonderful traditional patterns. It is such a classic. Your collection of fabrics is fabulous! Your sizing is so sweet - only 1" wow.
beautiful feather quilting. thanks for the sneak peak.
isn't it nice to have something ready to pick up and sew? your hexies are perfect for that.
    enjoy your family time.
