This month I finished up that little "Tree of Life" block that I shared last time. It is currently hanging in the Christmas Corner of my sewing room.
The quilting is mostly stitch-in-the-ditch, with the feathers in the setting triangles. You can see the quilting a little better in this photo, where I had just finished sewing the binding to the front and hadn't yet wrapped and pinned it to the back. This gives you a better size perspective, too. It finished at about 8 1/2" square. (Linking with Wendy at The Constant Quilter blog for the Monthly Minis.)
Except for the brown fabrics in the tree trunk, this is all made from fabrics from men's shirts found at thrift stores. All of the little HSTs were bonus triangles from when I made Bonnie Hunter's Smokey Mountain Stars pattern. Check out the link for the free pattern on her website.
I called my version Rocky Mountain Christmas. One of these days I might actually quilt it. Wouldn't that be a shocker!!
Another shocker is how short this post is! Crazy busy life prevents me from much stitching, though I have made progress on my "Mom's Flower Garden", and more hand stitching on my son's mission quilt. I'll share those soon.
Tonight DH and I are headed to Salt Lake City for a unique performance. It is a showing of one of my favorite old musicals, "Singin' In The Rain." It is shown in film, but the music is provided live by the Utah Symphony. Our children gave us the tickets for Christmas. Should be fun!

Caught this sunset a couple of days ago out my sewing room window.
Oh your mini is just fabulous and I gasped at the second photo seeing how small it really is! Those perspective shots are important, with piecing as tiny as yours, for us to truly appreciate it! I love musicals. Hamilton of course, Wicked years ago, just so many. It sounds very cool - movie with live orchestra accompaniment. Singin' in the Rain is coming to Tokyo this fall - I hope we can get tickets! An American in Paris is another Gene Kelly fave!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great star quilt. Perfect for Christmas all winter. You'll quilt it one day. Some quilts are more patient than others, lol. It took me 15 years to quilt a log cabin once.
I love musicals. That sounds like a fun evening. Live music is so wonderful too. I actually don't know if I've ever seen the entire movie. I must do that.
I guess my favorite Musical is Hamilton. I just saw it again this week in NYC. My second choice is Joseph and The Technicolor Dream Coat. I saw it 3 times with Donny Osmond in Chicago. I also love Sweeny Todd with Johnny Depp. I could obviously go on. ha ha

ReplyDeleteMy favorite musical would be a toss-up between South Pacific and West Side Story. Your Singin' in the Rain event sounds awesome! That little mini is amazing and doesn't look too wonky from here. I hope you can get the star quilt finished soon--it's beautiful!

What beautiful quilting and a sweet way to use your recycled hst's. You continue to be the true master of "mini"! Enjoy your date weekend.
ReplyDeleteYour tree of life mini is adorable, really love your custom quilting. I have been perfecting my mini HST, so might try this pattern as my next challenge - thank you for the inspiration! I really like your BH quilt also, she has such lovely free patterns, but so many heavily pieced and I am after some easier ones to have volunteers make for teenages.

ReplyDeleteJust so sweet, Janet!! I've never really liked the tree of life pattern until I saw your little quilt. No, I'm not tempted to make one!!! Trying desperately to finish my granddaughter's graduation quilt before knee surgery March 17. Hope to have the binding on, then I can hand stitch as I recoup. Happy spring!! It's on it's way!!!
ReplyDeleteI like the colors on this mini very much. And 8 inches is really small. I made a similar tree block (larger in size) and it was not the easiest to do and not lose a point here and there.

I don't have men's shirts - too expensive, believe it or not - but have accumulated a decent amount of homespuns and other plaids so have another plaid quilt hovering in my brain. Your movie plus live orchestra sounds fabulous! I am not a big fan of musicals, but would see that in a heartbeat. Favorite? West Side Story. Beautiful sunset!

ReplyDeleteOur local theatre gave a similar performance with the orchestra providing the music for a musical. It seems like it was a more recent movie, though. I like "Singin' in the Rain." And I love "White Christmas" and "Meet Me in St. Louis." I'm sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Such tiny mini, and so adorable! That Rocky Mountain Christmas is beautiful - very effective use of the plaid. and wow that sunset! With that kind of view from the sewing window, I would want to spend a lot more time in the sewing room, not sure how productive that time would be though!

ReplyDeleteI like your mini tree! It doesn't look Charlie Brown-ish at all! Your Rocky Mountain Christmas is lovely! You've got *plenty* of time to quilt it before Christmas 2020, right?!? Hahaha ... famous last words, I know! I'm happy to help a daughter out!! I *do* love musicals. I'm hard pressed to pick one favorite, though. Definitely Sound of Music is in the top ten, and so is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. My Fair Lady and The King and I make the list, too. Brigadoon has always been a cheeky fave, as well. What about you? What are some of your favorites?! Your view is stunning. I'd be hard pressed to ever leave my home (or my window, for that matter), with that view!! :)
