No matter what layout I try, there is always one leftover block hanging out in the breeze. Next week is supposed to be the last week and I am really curious to see what this is to become.
At Randy's urging, I finally put the borders on all of the blocks. I had been holding off to see the layout and decide if I wanted to do them the way they were posted, or the way I was planning. She convinced me to "take a chance", so I did them my way. I had already turned the 36-patches into 49-patches, and now I made the inner borders from neutrals instead of colors. I have such a hard time following a pattern exactly! :)
I guess all of these blocks are going to wait patiently for the final clue (certainly more patiently than I am waiting).
Have you figured it out?
Below you see a very rough draft of my first Midnight Flight block. I got so confused trying to lay this out, that I haven't sewn it together yet. My colors do not provide as much contrast as Bonnie's, so the design is not as bold.
As I was pressing the units to lay this out I realized something that made me laugh. I think my 1.25" finished blocks in the Fairy Garden Party quilt are more carefully and precisely sewn than these larger units are. I guess I get sloppy when I go large.
Oh, right. I see the block in the upper left quadrant that I have turned the wrong way--like I said, I had a hard time with this layout. At least it isn't all sewn together.

The finished size is approx. 24" x 26". I folded a piece of fabric to that size and put it on my kitchen table. I played and played. This mystery has me baffled as well. I love the little blocks. Can't see what they do with them. I'd love for it to have them set on point. Time will tell.

Now that you have shared the challenge with it, we will be interested in the finish:) I like your version of the flight block....all those plaid shirts:)
ReplyDeleteI have not tried to guess the monday mini layout yet but i agree that it does seem rather strange to have an "extra" block. 2 days till the finish!!
ReplyDeleteI love your on-point layout and those warm colors are so You! Mystery quilts haven't been something I've participated in after completely bombing out on one 3 months into it. Didn't like where it was going and the final reveal was just a mish-mash. Still have the blocks which are slowly becoming mug-rugs. I can't see a placement error in that Midnight Flight block! That one would be impossible for me to do. I like your shirtings for the block though and it looks like it will make up into a lovely soft quilt.

ReplyDeleteI don't often participate in the mystery projects as I like to know what I am getting into rather than waiting for the surprise ending. Thus, I have been saving the block info and probably will never do the project as I will lose interest after it is over.

ReplyDeleteLove your Midnight Flight block. It will be a lovely soft quilt. I can't believe you made the 36 patch blocks into 49 patch blocks. You are awesome. I have such a hard time keeping the little squares straight. Do you sew a 1/4 inch seam and then trim the seam allowance? I have played with the layout also and have come up with nothing. I think it might end up being a random layout so I might end up making some extra blocks to even it out. We'll see. I swear I saw a sneak peak on one of their blogs posts but I can't find it again.

ReplyDeleteLove how you did your mini blocks, the neutral inner border looks wonderful. I keep playing around with different mini blocks I've seen so whatever the final layout it, I think I'm going to end up with a couple of totally different versions of it.
ReplyDeleteThere was a little sneak peek at the finished top on Instagram. There is a narrow border/stripe print between the rows and she also used an acid green spacer between the blocks. I liked the way it looked so much, that I had to start making the blocks--lol! I love the plaids in the Midnight Flight block!
ReplyDeleteGuessing that you will be surprised when the reveal comes from Temecula Mystery. I don't know how many yimes I messed up my 1st Misnight Flight Block and I had Bonnie right there. Love it in the shirts. Just a little frogging for you to do.

ReplyDeleteTook me several minutes to of studying the photo to find the mistake in your Midnight Flight block. I'm glad you found the mistake before you'd sewing all the units together.

I am 3 weeks behind in my Temecula blocks, so guess that should be todays task, except they have forcast beautiful sunshine on a winters day, so guess I will be playing outside instead! I am just as intrigued as you about the design layout, but really hoping it doesnt involve sashing. Love your little blocks.
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything wrong in the upper right quadrant of your Midnight Flight block. What I see is in the upper left quadrant. The black HST need to be turned 180 degrees so they spin the same way as your other 3 quadrants. Your Monday Mini will be gorgeous no matter how it is set.

DeleteLove the Midnight Flight in plaids. The lighter colors give a softer feel. I can't find a mistake on your block. It looks great to me. The little mystery blocks are cute all together, it's going to be fun to see how they get assembled.

My sewing is much more accurate when I am sewing the smaller pieces and miniatures than large blocks. I don't think I have figured out the mystery layout--will wait for you to reveal the mystery.

Your mystery blocks look terrific in all those earthy colors! The light plaids of the Midnight Flight were a shocking change, eeek! Can't wait to see what they do for the layout.

Oh my. I looked and looked and couldn't see the bad block that was turned wrong. I guess I'd better stay away from this block for sure. I do like the colors you used though.
ReplyDeleteI'm proud of you, Janet! But why try to figure out the placement of the blocks yet?? Why get all stressed over that?? I didn't realize we were almost done with this project. I looked at today's blocks and it didn't have a layout yet.

It is fun to play with the blocks, trying to imagine the final layout. Maybe there will be more than one more block for this quilt? I like those little 49-patch blocks. Looking forward to what happens with these. I'm like you: I have trouble sticking to a pattern, or even following a pattern. It seems like I always change something.

ReplyDeleteI've only done one mystery quilt and was clueless as to how it would turn out until the end, but so glad that my color and fabric choices worked out. I'm guessing the designer has a surprise ending for the layout. Love the colors you picked, rich and warm. The Midnight Flight block is so complex, like all Bonnie's blocks. Hope you continue to play with your plaids and make many more yummy blocks.
