What do you think?

Is it possible to label quilts without labeling them? I think so. See these quilts?
View from the loft of 34 of the 43 little quilts finished this year. The other 9 have been gifted.
These are all of the little quilts that I have finished so far this year, that haven't been given away.  I have sewn a label on every single one! I am so good that way.  Where I am not so good is actually writing on the label. This is how the backs of these quilts appear--this is just a sampling.

Lovely and pristine, aren't they? Kind of hate to spoil it by actually writing on them. : )

As I began to gather the quilts from their various resting places around the house, to my horror I discovered that some little quilts I finished LAST year also sported naked labels. Shocking!
How did this happen under my watchful eye? Oh, I remember now. When the last stitch has been taken on the binding, I always tell myself I will fill in the label in a little while--and then I never seem to get to it, unless I am giving it away.

So ALL of these embarrassingly bare quilts (45 of them) were gathered and stacked on the dining room table.

Let the labeling begin!! I have had to spend much time scrolling through my blog to make sure the info I am putting on the labels is correct. Good thing it was all documented somewhere!

I don't worry about having a beautiful label, but I do believe in labeling quilts--eventually. Whew--1/3 of them are done now. I needed a break.

So I turned my attention to some wool work. Poor photo, but it shows that progress has been made.

This is all sewn together and is about 15" x 19" inches right now. Needs borders.

Will put a second border on this. Almost added a cheddar border, but now I'm not sure. I need to audition a few more Fall colors before deciding. This photo shows me I should have used a darker green on the pumpkin stems.

My swap partner in Randy's pincushion swap has finally received the package I sent her, so I can share it with you. I made a boxy-style mini log cabin pincushion for Joy at The Joyful Quilter blog.
I added a package of my handcrafted soap. You can't tell through the packaging, but one soap is a spider (cute, not spooky), and the other one is a web.  Just the things you would want to use for washing up, right?

Randy and I kind of ended up swapping pincushions as well, unofficially. I sent her one with the little quilt swap we just did, and she returned the favor with this little red/white beauty, wrapped lovingly in some strips of fabric that you know will find their way into little quilts. : )

I remembered to get a photo of my "80 minutes a week" challenge project before it was all gone. Another success! Gluten Free Orange Pecan bread. Yum!! (Actually, the recipe is for Orange Walnut Bread, but I am allergic to walnuts.)

Something is in the works that I hope to share soon. It involves a newly released fabric line in my favorite color, and one of my most favorite quilt blocks.

Until next time,
Janet O.

  1. Good for you, getting to all that labeling! That is totally my downfall, most of mine that haven't been gifted are not labeled at all. Your wool project is so lovely and warm-fall-looking. I think I can guess not only the color but the fabric line you are hinting at, wondering if it is the same one I've been hoping to add to the stash (and just got the book with the quilt pattern).

  2. So many beautiful blank labels, I'm so glad you filled them in! Gorgeous collection.

  3. Naked labels....you had me laughing at their bareness. And the completed pile looks very good! Give Thanks looks awesome; and you are right about the other one and the stems. Aren't photos great as a help. Great pin cushions, and the bread looks yummy.

  4. Now that is a lot of labeling! You are so bold to put the label on before you write on it, but I see that you are far more accomplished than I am at "writing". And I have no excuse as we did have penmanship in grade school. They are all lovely and I hope you are as proud of yourself as we all are! I love the pin cushion you made. I love homemade soap and I'm sure she will too!

  5. You deserve a medal for doing the labels en mass. I have some in my collection that have never gotten a label. But now I try to do as I go.
What an incredible collection of tiny treasures - so so amazing!
Your Thanksgiving wool piece is really shaping up nicely.
congratulations on your baking efforts. Yum.

  7. There are lots of beauties on your table ! And you must certainly win a gold medal to label all in one day !
Wow....I try to do that when I finish a quilt ...
I think a green border should match with your wool top and i love the one with pumpkins !
    Bon appétit ! :)))

  8. Love how you always put a label on, and I am going to do the same with any new quilts I bind. Because this way they can get written on later. Keep on documenting your beautiful little quilts cause your grandkids will appreciate it later. The bread looks delicious!

  9. I'm always shocked when I come across a quilt I forgot to label, because I would have no clue when I made it!
It's so fun to see all those little cuties laid out--I know you will finish the labels in no time. Having them already sewn in place is half the battle. I can't wait to see what that next project will be!

  11. Look at you with all those wonderful unlabeled quilts!! 😝😝😝 what do you write your labels with? I love the pin cushion you sent for the swap, too. Beautiful!!

  12. labels are such an issue with me. I am doing better about it in the past couple of years BUT there are older ones lurking in the piles without an ID. My friend recently asked me about a Daer Jane quilt and I said I had finished one. PUlled it out to see when I had finished it and you guessed it no label. SHame on me. You should be very pleased with yourself!

  13. I have such mixed feelings about labels. Rarely do them at the moment though sometimes I intend to and still forget. Yours look perfect on all those gorgeous minis :-) Joy is going to love that pin cushion and soap. What a wonderful swap!

  14. Ohhhhhhh you're such a tease with the new project. Such a lot of little quilts to label, Ms
Prolific!! Good for you catching up!

  15. Janet, all those finished projects!! I may go to minis, if you can get so much done!! Of course, I think you are super productive. And I have to laugh about your blank labels! I have done the exact same thing!!! Empty labels. At least they're READY for some information!!!
Can't wait to see what you've been up to, in secret.
Enjoy the little pin cushion. I never meant it as a response to your beautiful pin cushion with our little French General swap... but sounds good!!

  16. What a awesome collection of quilts. They look beautiful all laid out the together. So glad you're getting to the labeling. Thank goodness for having a blog to help get the documenting right. When a quilt isn't labeled, it doesn't belong to you any more, it belongs to the "unknown quilter". Your bread looks yummy!

  17. And you draw little quilt blocks on all of those labels? That is cute! I try to remember to sew one in while I'm putting on binding, but I make myself write on it before I sew it. But..reading your blog, I just realized that yesterday I put the binding and a label on my Sunflower quilt. Today I sewed the binding on my Little Buds quilt, and it never once crossed my mind to do the label! Ugh!
I don't like secrets...you need to give it up - lol!

  18. Well done filling in the labels! I think you need to buy a few more pens and leave them strategically placed around the house...where ever you stitch the labels down! Still they all looked good for the photo shoot, so the bonus is you have a record of 2016 work all in one photo. Wool work is lovely and the cake looks delicious!

  19. wow, such a lovely stack and you will be glad you went back and labeled them...always admire your precise wool work janet...and your pin cushions are always treasures to receive....

  20. That is quite a stack of quilts. You are so productive. I notice you didn't just put your name on the labels with the completion date. You seem to have done some explaining. And the little quilt block on each one is charming. So happy you found something yummy to make within your restrictions. It looks really good. Is your new project going to be purple?

  21. Purple churn dashes! Can't wait to see them!

Way to go on the baking! Looks scrumptious!!

All your little quilts are adorable, but what a job labeling. I'm horrible at labeling! You've inspired me to be better!

    Blessings and hugs!

  22. WOW!! I am so proud of you for getting all those labels completed!! You know how I feel about labels on quilts!! Your wool work is sure moving right along and looking wonderful!! That bread sounds relish!! And I love your boxie little pincushion for Joy!! Can't wait to see your surprise!! :-))

  23. What a bunch of lovely little quilts! So glad you are finishing the labels. Someday someone is going to want to know who made a lot of really pretty quilts, but they will have no clue without a label, or at least a list in a cedar chest like my aunt had. I always handwrite my labels before I sew them on. I did miss one a couple of years ago and had to dig back through my notebook for the date; not fun! ---"Love"

  24. Look at all those minis that needed labels! LOL! You set yourself up, didn't you?! The pincushion is darling -- and spider/spiderweb soaps??! How funny!! Give Thanks is looking terrific! For the smaller piece, what about a border in the bright green of the pumpkin stem? It might help pull it out a bit. Your orange pecan bread looks yummy!! YAY! I'm so happy to see you baking -- and enjoying the benefit of it!! Whoohooo!!! Hmmmmm, a secret project in the works . . . !! :)

  25. Love that little log cabin pincushion! :-) Congrats on labeling all of those mini quilts... I have not labeled any of my quilts... though that's really only 6 or so? lol! The bread looks yummy! I think I know which "new fabric" you are referring to... can't wait to see what you create!

  26. Writer's Cramp? I love my Blog and my Quilt Record book that keep my info on my ptojects in place. I found another thing that works on my cell phone camera. There's a 'Details' in the MORE drop down menuthat tells the date the picture was taken! Very helpful since I take pictures of my process and not all of them go on the Blog. The Orange pecan combo sounds yummy

  27. I am in love with each and every one of your quilts. A stunning array!

  28. Gosh Janet you have had a super productive year to date.....all those fabulous labels, always a good idea, afterall you never know in years to come where or who will have the privileged to own one of your quilts.

  29. I recently started sewing on the triangle like that but I wrote on them first. Unfortunately, not all of my quilts have labels, and I have had to do the same as you - check out my blog to find out when it was finished, etc. I love the wool appliqué.

  30. That is a lot of labeling! But you're good to have at least given yourself a starting point with it attached, ha ha. I'm only good at labeling quilts I give away, my own generally have no label. Love all your wool work and the many minis, as always.

  31. Your labels look so sweet. Perfect size for all the wonderful minis you have done this year - such an impressive collection!

  32. I am literally in awe that you have created that much this year! Very impressive!

  33. You did an awesome job with the labeling--I am terrible at this. The bread looks yummy and tasty--happy to hear you are finding recipes which are working for you.

  34. "Give Thanks" is still my favorite of your projects!

  35. Your quilt labels are adorable, Janet. I'm so impressed that you write AND add a drawing. I have never labeled a quilt. I think if I did the label would be part of the back and quilted right in place.

Your Give Thanks blocks look very fallish and comfortable.

  36. Hmm, is it the newest Plum line, forgot the exact name, but Pam Buda? I know that you do love that color. The labels are worth doing, good for you!

  37. I'm glad to see you labeling your little quilts! What a chore to do them all at once!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Absolutely AMAZING quilts! You are incredible! Love the way you put on your labels...and love the way you write on them! Perfection!

  39. I have done many small pieces but do not consider them completed until I have stitched on a label which is
done as soon as the binding is finished..I would rather do one at a time...thanks for sharing yours.

  40. I understand your "I'll get to it later" stand on writing out labels. It's how I operate the majority of the time... unless the quilt is being gifted. Thank you, again, for my beautiful new pin cushion. LOVE it (and the handmade soap, too!!)

  41. Good on you with the labelling - I'm guilty of leaving that job 'till later' as well! The bread sounds yummy - great to see some more success in the baking department :-)

  42. I agree on labeling everything, but may I ask what is the fabric material for your labeling? Is it muslin? And what type of pen are you using? Thank you! Beautiful work by the way.
