...as to the possible layout of the Nabby's Dowry blocks from Pam Buda's current SAL.
I know, I know--I wasn't going to do this SAL. But recently, when I pulled out the bag of batik HSTs (from the scrap swap with Sandi) and made the little table topper to go under my new African nativity, I realized what a treasure trove of HSTs I had. So Nabby's Dowry looks a little tropical--and yes, I know I made the block in the lower left corner incorrectly. It is staying that way!
I am almost through making Christmas scrap blocks. You may recall I started these last year with Randy's Barrister's Sow-Along. I kept going with my plaid shirt version, but petered out on the Christmas one. So I picked up again with Johna'Lee's Rancher's Daughter SAL. I just completed a few more.
What is it with lower left blocks? I see my error there, too. That one will be fixed!
I already knew that I wouldn't be doing all of the blocks in this year's SAL. I was just planning on a lap quilt for this set of blocks. So I am one block away from the amount needed. Here is how they all look together.
This is not the final layout, and it is much scrappier than I am accustom to making. I usually control color schemes or undertones. On this I decided to just use scraps and come what may. I'll need to use sashing or setting squares to unify things more. There are scraps from a few blog friends in here and it makes me smile when I look at those blocks.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the sewing room. My little tree is bearing more ornaments (a couple of the ones shown were gifts from friends--they are staying put), as I get more little pineapples made for DD#2 to sell at our local Novemeberfest. I'm also making some little log cabin ornaments this year. What would you say would be a fair price to ask for either of these ornaments? What would you be willing to pay at a gift fair? Or would you just think you could go home and make them? : )
I will be making a bunch more, and DD#1 has made a bunch, too. The proceeds will be going to DD#2's fundraising efforts for Dravet Syndrome research.
I was thinking this would be such a short post today, but it is longer than anticipated. At least I am consistent. : )
Until next time,
Janet O.

Ah ha! LOVE it that you caved!
ReplyDeleteYour blocks are fabulous...and maybe you even guessed the right layout!!!
Good for you...I was totally stumped!
I'm off to the sewing room to get my blocks caught up!
I'm not a big batik fan - but I love Nabby's Dowry!!! Looks fun and carefree!!! This one I chose to sit out, but it has been so much fun to see what others have put together!! Your Christmas scrap blocks are awesome!! You know me and scraps - yum, yum!! Your ornaments are just so sweet - I would definitely buy a couple at a craft fair - especially if I knew that you made them!! Can't wait until Christmas when I put out the one you sent me!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings dear friend!
Oh my goodness, you are a little caught up in Sew Alongs! And you have been productive! So many blocks! That should be fun arranging them. Pam's Sew Along is darling! Don't know what to tell you about the ornaments. They are darling. Good luck selling!
ReplyDeleteAs usual, everything you are showing looks wonderful! Love the first sampler...Pam Buda is coming to the Des Moines Guild in October. I can't wait! The rest of your goodies are beautiful also. I used to control the fabrics more as you mentioned about your Christmas blocks. Now, I have learned to appreciate a scrapper look for certain things. For others, controlled scrappy is the name I have given my control issues! About your ornaments...how long does it take you to make each one? Can you come up with an average amount of time?
ReplyDeleteI love your guess at Nabby's Dowry! I guess if it isn't correct, we could still do your version if we want. I really like how it looks in batiks, too. Great job in catching up with everything.
ReplyDeleteWow, I saw on Pam's blog that you had succombed!!And now you are ahead of me who has been sewing along all the time - LOL!! Clever you with the layout guess, I hadn't thought of that idea, I wonder what it will be?!! It does look like Christmas is happening in your sewing room - your sampler blocks look great and I would definiely buy one of your ornaments :-)
ReplyDeleteYou have such a warm and wonderful variety of Christmas blocks there. Are those 8 1/2" unfinished? I can't wait to see how on earth you will tame them with a unifying sashing, but I bet it will be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow... lots and lots of pretties! I like the idea of a scrappy Christmas quilt and yours has turned out nicely.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how long it takes to make one of those little Christmas ornaments but charging less that $5 would be giving them away. $7.50?
Good guess! I like the colors you have in your Nabby's Dowry SAL. Late to start and already caught up! Good for you. I made my FG blocks today and found the #7 I 'thought' I had already made. Now I have 2 extra blocks to choose from.
ReplyDeleteI adore your Nabby blocks! Aren't you smart for using such fresh and colorful fabrics! Your blocks are great from the SAL. And those ornaments are wonderful...it is hard to put a price on hand crafted works...I wouldn't charge less than $10, but it may also depend on what else is being sold there. They sure are pretty!
ReplyDeleteAre you going to become a batik kind of gal?
ReplyDeleteI too love your Nabby blocks... such fresh and colorful fabrics!
ReplyDeleteYour becoming famous for your little ornaments...I think they're worth every bit of $10, just that some people don't appreciate all the work that goes into them. Even little ones...more so I think.
Julia ♥
I was shocked when I saw you working with batiks! They sure made for some pretty blocks - good for you! And good for you on all of these SAL! Your Christmas blocks really look nice, I'm anxious to see what you do for sashing. Love your ornaments - I need to make some for our tree (do you really think that will happen?!) they are so cute. It's hard to know how much to charge - I know how much time is involved, and it's pretty difficult to get what they are worth.
ReplyDeleteI'm always amazed by what you get done. I can't wait to see how you quilt these once they are finished. Your quilting is beautiful and our dear friend Annie was complementing on your machine quilting too.
ReplyDeleteKristie
I don't know - I think that scrappy thing is becoming imbedded in your soul - now don't deny it!! :-))
ReplyDeleteMy eyes are suffering from shock after seeing these batik blocks on YOUR blog! LOL Great layout - I had a really busy weekend and haven't made the last four yet - but they will get done very soon. Will be interested in seeing Pam's layout to see if it's as nice.
ReplyDeleteJanet, those blocks are looking fabulous! Can't wait to see how you set them!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks lovely Mom! I love your bright batiks!...something so different on your wall :)
ReplyDeleteHappy to have helped with your SALs... I have had those HSTs for sometime from my projects Kollette, Kerfuffle, and the new one not yet named (hint, hint) Deck-ade the Halls. It sure is nice to see that they have new homes. You do so much great work on your ornaments. Yes there are those who would say I can do it myself, but I for one could see purchasing one for $10-$12. Not many would want to tackle such tiny piece work. Sandi
ReplyDeleteYour assortment of blocks is so wonderful. There is lots of eye candy there. I think it is always hard to price things that are handmade. All of us that read your blog know how much time and effort go into those ornaments. I think I would ask at least $10. I have been in booths where we sold things with the proceeds to go to charity, and people have come up and asked if they could just make a donation. They are really cute and will sell for sure.
ReplyDeleteJanet,
ReplyDeleteYour projects are awesome indeed...love the little pineapple ornaments...maybe I will run into you at one of the quilt shops...
Mary
Love your layout for Nabbys Dowry. And the Christmas blocks are so festive! It's always hard to set a price. I wouldn't go under $10 and I'd go as high as $15 if you think that would fly. Good luck with it!
ReplyDeleteI love your guess! won't it be interesting to see the final result! gee I love your little tree & all it's goodies, they are soooooo cute!
ReplyDeleteRunning a little late on my checking out my favorite blog. I really like the table topper, and using batiks it is awesome. I do many craft shows and I wouldn't charge under $10.00. It is your work and your time, people that love quilting wouldn't hesitate to pay the price. It is other people that think they are so nice and can't figure out why one would charge the price. Your colorful blocks are really nice.
ReplyDeletelove, love, love the batik scrappy quilt! oh i am such a color addict! and your little tree is sooo cute! and your christmas scrappy is over the top...oh i love scrappy in any color! both so pretty...
