Temecula's Rothermel 25th Anniversary SAL quilt, sort of

I tried to follow Temecula's SAL directions all the way to the end, but I just couldn't make it work for me. So, with my apologies to them, this is the resulting flimsy.
Most of my CW stash is in the form of FQs. I tried to find fabrics to make the long vertical pieces in between rows, but from my limited CW yardage, nothing emerged that clicked for me. My default setting is sashing and cornerstones, so that is where this went. The outer border fabric is a Judie Rothermel design. I didn't have enough of her fabrics to make the whole quilt, but I thought I could at least surround the blocks with one of her designs. This isn't the best looking border I could have put on this piece, but it is the best of the two "Judie" fabrics that I had in large enough quantity to cover the territory. This was a fun SAL. The blocks made up quickly and the quilt is a little larger than most mini quilts.

I don't know if you recall this little quilt that was a New Year's project on the quiltsbycheri blog, she called "Counting Down the Hours." I thought the little hourglass blocks were a clever idea for the new year. I made them from a French General charm pack that was gifted to me by Kris. On Tuesday, after having a delightful lunch in town with Kris the day before, I decided it was about time I quilted this up. I used the Sally Terry Twist stencil for the blocks and then called upon my SewCalGal FMQ Challenge experience to feather the border. Patsy Thompson's excellent December tutorial gave me the courage I needed to attempt this. On the first photo you can see the line I drew (using a bendable ruler as guide) to create the spine of the feathers. No, the feathers aren't perfect--far from it, but they are coming along. On the back side you can see the overall effect.

I have also played with another design of Patsy Thompson's that I want to use in a quilt sometime soon. I really enjoy quilting this one. It is on her website in her free downloadable designs, and you can buy the DVD where she demonstrates this one and many others.

'Gathering Patches" is the current SAL on quiltsbycheri blog. She is making three mini quilts from nine patches. I opted to only make the first two, which she has now posted. I followed the directions for the first one, but when it came to the border, mine just didn't look put together right. I know there isn't a "right" way, but I should like it, shouldn't I? So this is my flimsy--just added a narrow border before the outer one. So many of my fabrics were dark. Just thought it needed a bit of something to lighten it.
Don't cringe, but I think I will bind it with a red that came from my Homestead Hearth scrap bag. I have the second little "Gathering Patches" quilt on a design board, ready to sew together. I'll save that for another time, because I want to show you this...

I played in Kool Aid with my wool again on Wednesday. It is so fun! I left some of them bright for now (though the camera flash makes them appear brighter than they really are). Who knows, I might actually use some of it that way, but I really like creating a color and then making it "muddy" for a vintage look. Now I need to get busy and use it!

I have made some progress (quite minimal) on Easy Street, and have almost finished hand quilting  Abundance. By next time I hope to have my Rancher's Daughter QAL blocks ready to link up with John'aLee at The Scrappy Appleyard.
So much fun stuff going on! : )

  1. All of your little quilts are great and your quilting is wonderful! I used the Terry Sally twist on a quilt quite a while ago and it was pretty easy. I need to use it again as it looks really good. Love your border feathers! What a wonderful pile of wool you have!

  4. You have been getting some quality quilting time. Your quilting is looking great. The wool dying looks like fun, I have yet to try it. Some Ladies in my area have started a wool piecer's bee and we are meeting twice a month. We are sharing what we know and I think it will be fun. Also love the snow pictures.

  5. You know, I like your sashing and cornerstones better than the vertical strips. ;-)

And I like the Counting Down the Hours quilt ... your feathers in the border really finish that quilt.

A red binding on the little 9 patch quilt won't make me cringe ... I like adding a little pop of color with the bindings. ;-)

Wow, look at all that wool you've got ... can't wait to see what you do with it all.

  7. I'm tired just reading about all that you are getting done. Then I laugh about all that great wool! All from the one who, a few short months ago, would not even touch the stuff! Look at you go! I absolutely love what you are doing with this. How do you get them muddy? And where are you finding all this great wool?

  12. I didn't like the SAL setting for the quilt either. I'm going to steal your setting idea, and perhaps this quilt has a chance of getting finished.

  22. Your quilting is lovely and sashing with cornerstones seems to be my favorite one to go to. I love your dying wool with koolaide tip, one I am definitely going to do. One of the ladies at a club meeting generously gave us wool pieces from her stash of finds and I'm going to try this out on them.

  23. Love your quilts and your wools! I did some wools the same way recently, but yours look much better than mine! I must ask, how do you muddy them when using cool aid? I purchased more today to do some more...can't wait!

  28. I like the way your Temecula Quilt worked out. When the quilt talks to you, you have to listen, even if it was the shortage of CW stash. Cute little 9 patches. I love your quilting, from the back it looks perfectly fine!

  29. Love that wool!
Your QAL turned out really cute. It makes it yours when you don't follow the setting exactly.
    Lovely machine quilting!!

  30. It's always such a pleasure to view your little quilts Janet! I just love each one! I think your sashing and border treatments are right on the money, and I definitely agree that the Gathering Patches quilt needed that lighter inner border to lift it up - it's perfect!

Your quilting is gorgeous!!! You should be so proud of how accomplished you have become - your hard work is definitely paying off! Those feathers are wonderful :*D I went over to Patsy's site for that quilting design but there are a lot of them there. Do you remember the name of this one? I really like it and would love to practice it!

  32. Dear me! Why Janet, your quilting is just breath-taking on that precious little piece. Please silence that harsh inner critic and bask in some well-earned self praise. Some modesty is mis-placed.

  39. I read somewhere about a Judie R tribute wish I could think of where. Has to do with a special event in her life. You might look into it because I think your project might count. Maybe you'll win something fun. Your quilting is advancing more and more each time you share. Amazing that someone would come up with the Kool-Aid idea. Nice post Janet! Sandi
