A Disjointed Jumble of Things

These little nine patches...

...will be joined by a few more to make another one of these little quilts, but with the values reversed. I plan on making the second one the same size as the first. The blocks have been cut from scraps, and the rest are waiting to be sewn. I am starting to do a tiny bit of rotary cutting now, so I thought it should be for something tiny.

Just over 3 1/2 rows of blocks yet to piece on the barn raising.

The parts are ready on design boards, with a few extra strips leftover. Hmm, someone should make a mini quilt out of those leftovers, don't you think?

One more block got assembled on my Settler's Puzzle quilt, which I began years ago in a class with Pam Buda.

As soon as I am able to square up more units, I think this will go together quickly. The sawtooth border may slow me down, though.

In my last post I told you I would get shots of the Sandhill Cranes, and I did--in their mating dance, no less.
Wish the dead tree hadn't been in the way!

The first lilac bouquet of the season graced our dinner table Sunday. I have 16 bushes right now, but only a few of the buds have started opening yet.  Can you smell them? Oh, it is heavenly!

I wanted to share something that I finally made, after drooling over the recipe for about a year now. How does Raspberry Coconut Coffee Cake sound? I hurried and snatched a photo of the last three pieces, before it was all gone. It is always a nice surprise when a gluten free recipe is yummy enough to share without apologizing for the gritty texture, or starchy mouth feel.

The first blogger I ever met IRL was Mary, on one of her trips to Utah. Well, last week Mary stopped on her way to a quilt event with friends. She spent the night at our home and was a patient listener, as I talked her ear off! Here we are in front of my design wall. Thanks for the visit, Mary. Next time I'll let you talk. :)

I just realized that this week is the 7th anniversary of my blog (this Friday, to be exact). Stay tuned.
Until next time,
Janet O.

  1. The reverse placement for the nine patch mini will be a good comparison to study. Moving values around always has a difference appearance. Your log cabin has really come together! How about a table runner with the leftovers?
Now the coffee cake sounds delicious......glad it found its way to you.

  3. What a fun filled post. First of all - yes yes yes on that coffee cake! I love coffee cake - yum
Lilacs always remind me of my mother. She had a beautiful hedge row of them. This is the first yard that doesn't have one, and I'm going to plant one this year!
Love seeing your ongoing piecing projects. those tiny nine patches are so so sweet.
Thanks for the crane photos. Beautiful colors

  5. It's so good to see you back at "it" Janet. You surely are getting more done with your limited ability to use your shoulder, than most of us do on a "normal" day. ha! You've got some beautiful projects going there. I'm loving the Settler's Puzzle a lot! Your cake looks yummy; we are low carb'ing around here and it's difficult to find something sweet for those times I feel like I've just GOT to have it! Enjoy those glorious lilacs!

  6. I'm drooling over all your projects and the cake too. I love Sandhill Cranes. We met up with some of them at a local park. Hubby had some bird seed and tried feeding them..lol They chased him around a parking lot wanting more. Hugs

  8. OH how fun to meet Mary! Love it when quilt bloggers get to meet up in real life!
Looking forward to our lilacs blooming but it won't be for a while yet.

  9. Lot's of fun going on--so glad you are doing better! I have a lilac bush right outside my kitchen window and love seeing the progress each morning when I open the blinds. So far, we have fat green buds--it won't be long before I smell those wonderful scents too!

  11. First of all, "Happy Blogiversary"! Once again you amaze me with those mini blocks. And yes, I think the leftover Barn Raising are screaming for you to make another mini - or rather "micro" quilt. I can almost smell the lilacs! Ours should be out by next week unless we get another snow! The coffee cake sounds delicious too!

  12. You are sharing so many beautiful things on your blog. Wonderful projects - I look forward to seeing them completed, and how wonderful you were able to see the cranes and share the photos. That coffee cake looks delectable. Can you share the recipe? And meeting blogging friends in person is always wonderful.

  13. Perfect antique lavender reproduction for your little quilts...and couldn’t help but be impressed with how organized and neat your cut pieces are waiting to be sewn. Happy to hear you are able to do a little more cutting each day...We have visits from sandhill cranes but have never witnessed their dance (perhaps they felt the tree branches provided some privacy:-) What a treat to see all our feathered friends return for the summer...no lilacs here yet - we are so far behind.

  14. First things first --- I need a piece of that coffeecake NOW! Looks scrumptious! Again, your tiny blocks amaze me. Seeing your Log Cabin again inspired me to drag out mine to decide how to quilt it. First I have to rip the small amount I quilted last year; it doesn't suit me at all! I love the colors in yours. Glad you are feeling better. ---"Love"

  15. You must be feeling better because you certainly have accomplished a lot. That's very good news. Everything is coming along so nicely and I can hear the enthusiasm in your voice. The coffeecake looks delish and nothing beats the scent of lilacs.

  16. It good to see you gradually being able to do a little more...and as always I love what you are up to...and admire the progress you are making in spite of the difficulties...where there's a will there's a way! Lovely to spend time with a bloggy friend too. I've been cooking GF for such a long time now that I neither notice nor apologise for any shortfals in flavour or taste... those I bake for have to like it or lump it!! Is there an online link to the successful recipe? The Cranes are beautiful - it would have been lovely to watch them in their dance.

  17. So good to see you are easing your way back into quilting. I'm sure you missed it greatly. No lilacs in my area yet :( spring is very far behind schedule in WNY. I'll enjoy your in the meantime. I may have asked before but are all 16 the same color? I suppose if you have missed a photo of the last 3 coffee cake pieces you might have needed to make another...

  19. Three lovely quilts. I love the pretty background for the mini. I wish I could smell those flowers and taste your cake!

  20. Your title is a misnomer, your photos show a wonderfully organized "jumble"! Those pastries look delicious, we have several members of our congregation who are on gluten free diets, so everyone is always looking for new recipes so everyone can share the goodies brought to our monthly potlucks.

  21. I do love those tiny quilts you piece together Janet. I hope your shoulder is improving for you at last. The photos of the cranes looks amazing ... as does that plate of raspberry slice. Sounds so delicious. Lovely photo of you & your friend. Have a great week Janet.

  22. OOhhh p.s. forgot to say ............. LOVE love those lilacs. Have serious lilac envy!!

  23. I just love lilacs!! We had some in our back yard when I was growing up in Illinois. For 30 years in Texas we couldn't have one, but now, I have a small bush and it is getting ready to bloom! It's a mini bush, but I walk past a large bush and stop to smell the lilacs. The coffee cake looks yummy - raspberries are another favorite of mine.

  24. I'm happy your shoulder is getting better enabling you do more stitching. Your sewing life doesn't seem jumbled at all, just filled with wonderful projects and ideas.

  25. Thanks for the Lilac photograph! (Notice my name)!

  26. I don't have any Lilac bushes. I had a good sniff of my friends bouquet last night. I had a whirlwind trip. Sew much Fun. Lots of selfies!! I will be waiting to see the finished new 9-patches in a quilt. I should have helped you do some cutting while we talled. I put you on my Blog post today. Happy Blog-O-Versary

  27. It's a great feeling to be able to rotary cut (carefully) and begin stitching again after shoulder or arm surgery (I've had 6). So glad you are making progress with the healing process. I really like your reverse background nine patch minis and your log cabin reminds me I have one on my "future quilt" list. It has to be encouraging to find a gluten free recipe that is both beautiful AND delicious!!

  28. You are doing great as you recover! The log cabin looks beautiful and the mini's are always darling. Thanks for the pictures of the sand hill cranes, too!

  29. I am so jealous that you have lilac bushes. They won't grow here. There was a big lilac bush outside one of my bedroom windows when I was growing up. I loved when it bloomed in the spring time. A fond memory.

  30. I'm thinking it's just as well the dead tree was in the way of the birds....this is a family show after all! :-) Loving your log cabin, it's creeping together nicely. The slice/cake sounds an interesting mix of flavours, was it nice? I noticed you didn't offer me any? ........kiwi hugs xx

  31. Happy blog birthday....... I've never grown lilacs.... Very pretty though....... Lovely to meet big friends......special friendships we have.....

  32. Great post!! But I must say, your new nine patch is very handsome but I like the original one much, much better!! :-) And the cranes are faboo!! My neighbor has lilacs that are falling over my fence, I might just have to go borrow some!! They are some of my very favorite flowers!!

  33. I love those little nine patches...both versions :)
    Nice shots of the cranes!

  34. Such tiny blocks! It's fun that the first quilt will have a sister (or several). I love your Settler's Puzzle quilt. I love the look of non-scrappy quilts, that is, quilts that use the same fabrics and colors throughout in the same places, but I get totally bored when I try to make them. Do you?
It seems like your shoulder must be making good progress, Janet, especially if you're beginning to use the rotary cutter.
I love lilacs but sadly we don't have any in our yard here.
Great photos of the cranes. It seems that they didn't feel intimidated by your presence.

  35. Yum, the coffee cake looks delicious.
    More great little blocks!
Cranes are a favorite bird of mine. Thanks for the photos.

  36. I know I've said it before, but your itty bitty blocks amaze me! I love seeing your lilacs too as I don't have mine anymore and I miss them.

  37. Of course your projects are oh, so lovely! The Settlers Puzzle and Barn Raising quilts are very, very pretty. A stop by your blog always inspires me! Happy blogivesary; I am so glad that you're part of this blogging community. I met a quilter/blogger IRL last week, we brought our husbands and had a grand time. Hugs to you as summer cranks up,(I can smell those lilacs !!!) enjoy your days, my friend!
